The benefits are immeasurable. Giving a skateboard to a child is like giving them a sense of freedom, a sense of self-worth. It may be only a skateboard to you, but to them it offers a few moments of freedom, adventure, creativity and accomplishment. It gives them pride and self esteem.
Students restored boards to give to children in Rosarito Beach, Mexico. While learning to use power tools, electric sanders and painting in the workshop, these students gain pride in the fact that they are giving to others.
From our 6th graders to theirs. Two 6th grade classes that chose to do their reports on Cuba are receiving a Boards Over Borders skateboard to give to 6th graders in Cuba. Letters and pictures will be reciprocated. “Peace between children.” The new generation.
Here at the Boardroom, we have a lot of kids coming in and out every day, who maybe can’t afford things . . . we do our best to help everyone. I didn’t have a lot growing up, and it was little things like this, people giving out their extra stuff, that I grew up on . . . Now that we’re in a position to offer that to another person, I think that’s my job, at this point in my life. I’ve received a lot from other people, their generosity. Coming now from a place of abundance, I think we can spread that.
